歓迎!

Welcome! 歓迎 ( huān yíng ) was one of the first words I learned in Mandarin. In Japanese we also tend to learn quickly that ようこそ is the usual word for "welcome". But, as it also happens in Korean, sometimes there is another word with the same meaning but that is considered more formal and/or "literary", and comes from Chinese.  In Japanese 歓迎 is read as かんげい and is a noun, but can be used with する as a verb. From the well-known Core6k decks we get these two examples: 温かい歓迎を受けました。 I received a warm welcome.  日本に来てくれたらいつでも歓迎します。 If you can make it to Japan, you'll be welcome anytime.

Notebook and Hanja

So here's something interesting I've found out recently: the word for notebook in Korean is 공책, a word I have forgotten on occasion. But looking at the hanja for this word we find 空 冊 and this makes the word much more recognizable if you know the Chinese characters: 空 (read as kōng in Mandarin and くう in Japanese) means empty, or sometimes sky, air. 冊 is used as a counter for books or volumes in Japanese and Chinese. So 空 冊 basically means "empty book", and an empty book is a notebook, 공책.
